Sir Lewis Hamilton: the race winner, the world champion, the exception to the rule.
Before the seven-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton, was the zero-time World Champion Lewis Hamilton. Making his rookie debut at the Australian GP in 2007, Hamilton already had the weight of the world on his shoulders. The first black F1 driver in history, racing the front-running McLaren, replacing Kimi Raikkonen, alongside Fernando Alonso who had just won back-to-back World Championships.
Still I Rise
These are the words emblazoned on the back of Lewis' helmet. With such a massive expectation resting on his shoulders, the Brit showed the world what he was made of. Taking twelve podiums and four race wins Hamilton put together an incredibly impressive rookie championship campaign; a heartbreaking mistake at the penultimate round in 2007 meant he missed out on the World Title by just a single point to Raikkonen. Still I Rise. The 2008 season saw Hamilton's form continue at such a level, as he now took on Ferrari's Felipe Massa in a brutal Championship fight. The onslaught lasted all the way to the final round.
The Brazilian Grand Prix.
Hamilton led the Championship by seven points, but the final round was the home circuit of his championship rival. His rival started on pole, whilst he was set to start from 4th. Hamilton and Vettel had a race long fight for 4th and 5th place. Either of those places were good enough for him to win the World Championship, whilst Massa led the race. With less than ten laps remaining, the rain started to come down and most of the front-runners pitted for intermediate tyres, including Hamilton who led Vettel into the pitlane. When they came out, Hamilton was in 5th and Vettel 6th, as Timo Glock gambled on staying out. In the wet conditions, Hamilton went wide, and Vettel passed him. Demoting Hamilton to 6th, and therefore 2nd in the World Championship. Still I Rise. Hamilton persevered, Hamilton kept his pace strong and harassed the back of Vettel's car as they laps counted down, and the rain got harder and harder. Massa took the win at the Brazilian Grand Prix, and as he crossed the line he was World Champion. The words of Martin Brundle will raise the hairs on your arms. "Is that Glock?!". On the last corner of the last corner, Hamilton passed Timo Glock who was still on slicks. Hamilton took the World Championship on the final corner, on the final lap, of the final round: at the Brazilian Grand Prix.
