The 1986 Formula 1 season went considerably well for the Brazilian driver as he finished in fourth place in the championship in the Lotus.
Starting the season at his home race, Senna managed to finish in 2nd and at the next he stepped up his game and won the Grand Prix in Spain.
This put Senna first in the championship going into the San Marino Grand Prix, however a retirement in the grand prix caused a set back in the great start to the season.
This tough race was overcome in his next two races in Monaco and Belgium as he finished both races on the podium and picked up and a fifth place and a win in his next two.
However, the retirement theme continued in the second half of the season as Senna picked up five more retirement's pushing himself out of championship contention despite winning three Grands Prix in that period.
This resulted in a fourth-place finish for Senna in the championship - a strong finishing spot despite the tough periods he had to face over the season.
