"A lot of people criticize Formula 1 as an unnecessary risk. But what would life be like if we only did what is necessary?" - Niki Lauda
Epitomising speed and engineering excellence, this engine cover offers a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a collector. Used by McLaren's Niki Lauda and John Watson during the 1982 F1 season, this truly is one of the greatest pieces of racing memorabilia to ever land on our auction.
An Incredible Story To Be Told
Lauda remains one of the most influential personalities in F1 to this day, and one of the most iconic names to come from the sport. He started his F1 career in 1972 at March - the 70s are often recalled as the years of legends like Lauda - before moving to BRM the following season. However, it wasn't long before Enzo Ferrari became interested in the Austrian ace. In 1974, Niki took his place at the iconic Scuderia Ferrari. Racing for the Prancing Horse team for four seasons, Lauda claimed two of his three World Championships behind the wheel of their cars. In 1975 Lauda won five races to claim the Title ahead of Emerson Fittipaldi, who was a fair way behind on points. However, Lauda is possibly most notable for his fierce rivalry with James Hunt, with the pair fighting over the 1976 title.
In 1976, Lauda overcame a serious racing incident, in which his race car caught fire. The severity of the accident left many to believe that Lauda would not make it, after he was left in a coma in hospital. But against all odds, Lauda not only survived, but returned to racing the same season - only two races missed. He lost out to the Title, but the story of the season was his incredible recovery and his sheer determination and dedication to the sport.
The 1982 season marked new beginnings for Lauda, as he joined the iconic McLaren F1 Team, following his retirement at the end of 1979. Lauda knew that McLaren sponsors wanted him to prove he was still a winner, and he did so by claiming victory at the 1982 Long Beach Grand Prix - only his third race back in an F1 car. Not only did Lauda prove he was still capable of winning races, but he showcased his desire and talent further by going on to claim a third World Championship Title in 1984, with McLaren.
