What makes the Turkish GP so significant?
The Turkish Grand Prix was not only a successful race for Hamilton, but it was also the race in which he clinched the World Championship Title. He became a seven-time World Champion, only the second driver to do so in Formula 1 history.
Heading to the Turkish Grand Prix - the first race held there since 2011 - Lewis Hamilton stood 85 points clear of his closest competitor, his teammate Valtteri Bottas. Only the pair of them were in contention for the Drivers' World Championship. It was the 14th race of the 2020 season.
Despite Hamilton's points lead, he started the race from sixth place on the grid. It was a wet start to the race, which saw many overtakes on the first lap. At first Hamilton seemed to get a good start, overtaking two cars to go up to third. However after going wide, he then found himself overtaken by the Ferrari of Vettel and the two Red Bulls. On lap 18 a spin from Verstappen meant that Vettel and Hamilton were able to pass him. A slow pitstop for Vettel on lap 34 and a spin from Alex Albon meant Hamilton was then up into the podium positions. A few laps later and Hamilton was closing in on the race leader, Sergio Pérez. And going into turn 12, made the move and overtook him.
The W11's speed meant that Hamilton was able to increase his lead, and by lap 45 he was also more than 15 seconds ahead, with tyres that were 39 laps old. By the final lap, Hamilton was able to glide across the finish line, 31.674 seconds before second place - which was claimed by Pérez, followed by Vettel in third.
This race symbolised a huge milestone in the motorsport world. Schumacher had held his World Championship record for so long - since 2004 - with many believing no one could ever reach it. However Hamilton, on that day in Turkey, was able to match the record, and had earlier in the season surpassed his race win record.
With all the records Hamilton achieved in the W11, the race car is a symbol of speed, success and glory.
