For the 1979 season, substantial progress was made in the aerodynamics of the race car and the team realised they had to follow the lead of their competitor - the Lotus F1 Team and design a ground effect race car. The 312T4 was based heavily on its predecessor, the 312T3, but did act as somewhat of a compromise as the T3 had not been designed with ground effects in mind. The car was redesigned to be as narrow as possible to maximise ground effects, broadened its flanks to further house the air intakes that would channel air to the radiators and intake ducts. The suspension was also reimagined in order to minimise drag, while the rear brakes were inboard to reduce the non-suspended mass and improve the grip and traction control of the model.
The 312T4 proved itself to be sturdy and robust and maintained the characteristic grunt of the T-series. Its reliability brought Ferrari another Driver's and Constructor's World Championship double, with drivers Gilles Villeneuve and Jody Scheckter behind the email.
The 312 T4 replaced its predecessor after the first two races of the season, at the South African Grand Prix - by which at this stage, Ferrari had secured only three points. The strength of the Ferrari chassis was apparent immediately, with Villeneuve heading a 1-2 victory, with the duo repeating that feat a mere month later at the US West Grand Prix. Ferrari carried on impressing, winning four more races that season in Belgium, Monaco, another 1-2 in their home race in Italy, as well as the US East Grand Prix - the final race of the season.
Overall, the Ferrari 312T4 proved to be a force to be reckoned with on the tracks throughout the 1979 season, claiming six race victories, a further seven podiums, five fastest laps and two pole positions, earning 110 points (3 points being earned by the 312 T3 chassis at the start of the season) and claiming both the Drivers' Championship and Constructors' Championship - an unforgettable season that was to be the last Ferrari to take the World Championship until Michael Schumacher's reign of supremacy began three decades later.
This model has been handcrafted and finished in the Amalgam workshops with the co-operation and assistance of Ferrari regarding original finishes, materials, archive imagery and drawings. The use of supremely accurate digital scanning of the original car has allowed Amalgam to perfectly recreate every detail at scale. Furthermore, it has undergone detailed scrutiny by both engineering and design teams to ensure complete accuracy of representation.
This will take pride of place in any F1 collection, commemorating an exciting season for the 'Prancing Horse' team.
